Culebra Island: beautiful, cheap and kid friendly

Did you say Barbados? Come again...
Did you say Barbados? Come again...

It is so beautiful I really don't want you to know

Cliche phrases like "the best kept secret", indeed apply.

I get up at about four o'clock in the morning, gather some groceries, drive 30 minutes east, park, unload, and get in line to pay for my ferry.

The sweet part starts here. I pay $4.50 for a round trip. Cross the street, wait around and then kind of hustle through the not so organized line in order to get in the ferry.

There is plenty of space in the ferry, we like to behave like there is never enough. So I finally squeeze myself in... Now, where to? Should I go to the upper deck or the lower? If I go to the upper deck I get the view, but no air conditioner. Viceversa for the lower deck.

I say the view is for the tourists, I am a local. Besides, once the ferry is en route, you are allowed to walk around, at your own risk.

Actually, for $2.25 each way, you assume all risks at the boat. There is no safety briefing, the life preservers are there, you will never know how will you react if anything happens. Not trying to scare you, just laying it out like it is. That is what I find to be the only downside. Watch out for your personal safety.

During the trip the belongings (coolers, chairs, etc.) are left in some common area. It doesn't look safe or secure, but they will be fine. Just go with the Caribbean flow.

Sit back and enjoy the... ride (paper bag required)

While sailing up against the waves, the ferry tends to rock heavily. I hope you didn't go for a heavy breakfast before getting on the boat because chances are you will indeed leave it there as a nasty souvenir.

Eat light, travel light.

This is a good reason to go on the upper deck. The breeze will certainly do you good if you ever have to go through this. The trip back from Culebra is a lot smoother since you will be sailing with the current.

Take this part of the trip as the way you are willing paying for it.

Land!

Once you arrive on deck and revert the process of unloading and such, you will soon see the public transportation available.

These are very honest people. Transportation to the most beautiful and popular beach in Culebra, Flamenco Beach, is about $5.00 round trip. Do pay the round trip in advance and make arrangements with the driver as to when and at what time will he pick you up. They already have their schedule down for the ferry. They know you have to leave at certain time. So just go with the Caribbean flow.

Once you get to Flamenco, or Flamingo Beach, prepare for a day of pure bliss.

To just sit and look around... paradise...
